Chapter Eleven

If anyone had told me this day would end with me having sex with Caden, I’d have said they were insane. And yet here he was in my arms, snuggled into the curve of my body like a part of me. I kissed his hair, inhaling his now familiar scent. My heart ached, and I wanted to share my feelings for him, but I held my tongue, uncertain he’d want that from me.

“Any regrets?” I asked softly. I needed to be sure he didn’t feel taken advantage of. I’d never have touched him if he hadn’t asked, and I hoped he realized that.

“No.” He glanced up at me, his expression gentle. “I wanted you.” He hesitated. “Hopefully you don’t regret anything?”

“Nope.” I tightened my hold. Just tell him. Tell him how you feel.

He laughed softly. “I could have died when you walked in on me.”

I grimaced, my face warm. “Sorry. I felt like you needed me. I thought I heard you call my name.”

He smoothed his palm over my chest. “Really?”

“Yeah.” I sighed. “I’d have sworn I heard your voice from across the house.” I’d been undressing in my room when I’d thought he’d called me. Without thinking, I’d simply responded, driven by instinct.

“Well, I definitely did need you.” He smiled up at me. “Obviously.”

My heart warmed with emotions I barely understood. I wanted to tell him how much I liked him, but I was afraid of scaring him off. I didn’t just want his body, I wanted him. All of him. I’d struggled with those emotions for days now, terrified of letting him see them. We’d shared an intense physical experience together just now, but that didn’t mean he wanted anything more. Perhaps he’d just felt grateful, or horny from pregnancy hormones. I didn’t want to read too much into this.

“It’s probably pretty clear the need was mutual.” We fell silent for a few moments.

“Your family was so kind.” He sighed.

“They liked you, just like I knew they would.”

“Maybe they wouldn’t if they knew more about me.” His voice was soft, and he kept his eyes down.

I bit my lip, wanting to ask him some personal questions, but not sure I should. He didn’t have to tell me about his past, I’d care about him either way. But I did like the idea of being emotionally closer to him. That sort of true intimacy could only come from people who trusted you wholeheartedly. If someone wouldn’t tell you about their past, could you really say they trusted you?

“You know… if you tell me stuff, I won’t change my opinion of you.”

He didn’t respond, but his breathing picked up.

“I’d like to know about your past only because it helps me understand you. Not so I can judge you or make you feel bad about yourself.”

He nodded, his stubbly cheek rubbing against my skin. “Okay.” He cleared his throat. “I get why you’re curious about my family. My mom. It was interesting seeing you with your family; like a little window into you that I don’t usually see.
